Costa Blanca is surrounded by beautiful palm trees that bring shade, life, and a tropical atmosphere to gardens and streets. But these palms also have a dangerous enemy – the red palm weevil, also known as the palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus).
What is the Red Palm Weevil?
The red palm weevil is a reddish-brown insect originally from Southeast Asia. It spreads easily and has become a major problem across the region in recent decades. Cities such as Torrevieja, Elche, and many others along the Costa Blanca are working hard to keep the pest under control.
The adult weevil can fly long distances and lays its eggs in many types of palm trees – in private gardens, parks, and along roads.

How Does It Spread?
The adult red palm weevil flies from one palm to another to lay its eggs. The female deposits her eggs in wounds or openings in the tree – and this is why recently trimmed palms are especially vulnerable.
When a palm is pruned, small cuts release scents that attract the weevils.
That’s why it’s extremely important to spray the palms immediately after every trimming.

Once the eggs hatch, the larvae burrow deep inside the trunk and begin to tunnel through the palm tissue. This damage usually goes unnoticed until it’s too late.
What Damage Does the Red Palm Weevil Cause?
The larvae feed inside the palm and destroy the inner fibers that transport water and nutrients. Over time, the crown of the tree weakens, and the leaves begin to droop and wither. Often, the palm appears to “collapse” from the top down.
When the damage becomes visible, it’s usually too late to save the tree.
In addition to killing the palm, an infested tree can also become a source of further spread. Infected palms must be either burned or buried to prevent new weevils from emerging and flying on to healthy trees nearby.
Why Is Spraying After Pruning So Important?
After pruning, the palm is at its most vulnerable because the open cuts release attractant scents that the weevils can detect from far away.
For this reason, it’s essential to spray the palms immediately after trimming with an approved treatment that protects the wounds and keeps the insects away.
Spraying acts as a protective “barrier,” preventing the weevils from laying eggs in the fresh cuts. This should be done not only to protect your own palm but also to help prevent the spread to other palms in the area.
